Cross Over

Communications technology has clearly been shaping life in ways unimaginable even just a decade ago. The global spread in uses of internet and mobile devices have been bringing on phenomenal opportunities in both the economic and social context, inviting fresh questions in no smaller scale than breakthroughs achieved and solutions provided as history unfolds.

Economists attribute certain recognition to the value which web and mobile technology adds to world economies while businesses may still be struggling to find the holy grail of business model for making money in cyberspace. Politicians and sociologists readily ascribe the divergence or even polarization in opinions - for good or bad - to the growth in social media which helps to gel and reinforce like-minded souls in shared-value clouds on relevant platforms.

As the sea can float as well as sink a ship, one can always choose to look at either the bright or dark side of things. Taking the former perspective, I am reaping the benefit of media technology and thoroughly enjoying my free instant chats on Blackberry with - guess who - my seven-years' old daughter's same-aged ex-classmates residing in another country a few thousand miles from where we live. This is the kind and scale of cross-over - in distance and generation - which could hardly be conceivable not too long ago. I am in awe of our contemporary privilege - of knowledge and happiness - to be found.
